19th March

Got the bus to Bexhill this morning, for a meeting between Hastings and Rother Councils. The idea of these meetings is to discuss issues that affect both areas. fficeffice" />Of particular interest at the moment are subjects such as the progress of the ‘Area Investment Framework’ for Hastings and Bexhill and the future of a country park at Pebsham.

things to do on rainy days

Spent a couple of hours on the PC:

 - finding out more about how bloggs work

 - uploading a link from my website – www.johnhumphries.net.

-  replying to email from the Local Government Urban Commission, (a body which considers urban issues of relevance to local councils). If you want to know what they do, just bash ‘urban commission’ into the search facility on www.lga.gov.uk

Spent a couple of hours doing the ‘skim and bin’ treatment on back copies of local government publications, then wrote up notes of ffice:smarttags" />Labour Group media meeting held on Friday.

Yesterday I went to a management meeting for the Local Government Information Unit in ffice:smarttags" />Cardiff (you can see what this organisation does @ www.lgiu.gov.uk ), this was followed by a training session on budget management.

The value of going to Cardiff is also that I got more of an idea of how devolved powers work between an Assembly for Wales and local government in that country.  Its not the kind of thing which lights everyones fire, but there is real value in English councils putting some calories into learning how regional structures work in other parts of the UK. fficeffice" />

I got my first five comments on the blog yesterday,  sadly they all seemed to be from from Bart Simpsons brother, so I then got to learn how to delete comments from a blog. Went to the Constituency Party meeting in the evening in St Leonards

I thought I would also see how easy it was to upload picture files. This is my allotment by the way. I'm not really a heavy drinker - these  are demijons with the bottoms cut off, which can then be used as bottle cloches.

I went to ffice:smarttags" />London today to attend a course titled Mentoring for Councillors.

In June this year there will be hundreds of new councillors coming into elected office who will miraculously be expected to just know what to do and have all the skills and support they need to run fully functioning local democratic structures.

Modern councils needs to address this issue through better skills and knowledge based training plus mentoring programmes where requested.

I deleted the photo from yesterdays entry because it was too large for the page.
