My local hospital
I went to the doctors in Warrior Square on Monday and was given a bit of paper to go and get a chest xray at the local hospital (I have had one of those coughs and chest rumbles which has been around for about six weeks and hasn’t responded to a couple of courses of antibiotics).

I remember from the past, that there used to be a very long and bureaucratic process where your GP had to write to the hospital and then you had to be notified from the hospital of an exact date and time for things like xray appointments. However, things seem to have changed over the past couple of years and you can now just turn-up on any day between 8.30 and 9.30 for a walk-in service. Hence I could go on a day when it wasn’t snowing hard, no appointments had to be rescheduled because of the weather and was seen within 10 minutes.
Lots of people treated by health services are full of praise for local hospitals and doctors and say they couldn’t fault what was done. This is of course completely at variance with the stories you get on regional TV, which only seems interested in hospitals when a bad report has been produced or to say things are in crisis. So speaking as a patient for once I would like to say thanks for the people at the sharp end for a good service and thanks to a government, which is achieving health service delivery for me when I need it.

No busses after 8pm tonight
Stagecoach have informed the council that they intend to stop operating bus services in Hastings at 8pm tonight, presumably because of the weather.

Libdems - concerned about your privacy and after your details.
Last night I discovered that the libdems are getting in a state about telephone canvassing. Their latest cause is ostensibly all about the subject of protecting anyone who is TPS registered from receiving phone calls by political parties. They have done this by setting up their own website (called DO NOT DISTURB  designed to produce form letters of complaint to be sent to the editors of local newspapers . Being Libdems, the default letter naturally also includes the usual stuff about how bad the Conservatives and Labour are on this subject, compared to the ever so nice, always pointing at holes in the road, calling for action, deeply concerned Libdems.

The smart bit, which you could argue is more invasive than the issue being championed, is that to get access to the form letters you have to submit all your personal details and email address to the Libdem website, these are then presumably stored for later use. Only after this do you get a ready made letter which you can either download as a PDF or have forwarded by email to the editors of your local papers. It also looks like the clever people who designed the system are using a commercial company based in the UK and Canada, called adocacyonline.net to deliver the complex bits for them.
Putting party allegiances to one side, I think it’s actually quite a smart way to use the internet for political activity and harvesting details. So smart that I'm tempted to have a go at writing my own letter about the way the Libdems do this and then use their system to send it to all the editors and dispel them of the impression that they are getting the individual thoughts from members of the public!

North Street Scaffolding
I have emailed officers again about scaffolding in North Street, which should have come down before Christmas but for some reason still just stands there getting in everyones way (particularly people with prams and wheelchairs!). Obviously sometimes work just needs to be done but since this has dragged on for so long I really think its time to start asking questions about enforcement action.

Well done Mrs Green
Mrs Green has just written to our local newspaper on the current hot subject of councillors allowances. Mrs Green says;
“We all have a rough idea of what a town councillor does – looking after the interests of people in his/her ward, and although I don’t want an itemised bill (i.e. as in a supermarket!) we, the local taxpayers, are funding the salaries of our local representatives – so a bit more information as to what they actually do wouldn’t come amiss.” Mrs Green is absolutely right, so I’m going to start a section on my blog dedicated to this idea, which will of course be called ‘Mrs Green’.
